The "Equipe FRM" label is awarded by the French Foundation for Medical Research (FRM) to distinguished research teams in biology and health that are developing innovative programmes with significant potential for medical impact. The FRM has selected the Chol-Tox team’s project, “Study of cholesterol-induced lipotoxicity in cardiometabolic complications,” as one of this year’s laureates.
The FRM Chol-Tox team project ‘Study of cholesterol-induced lipotoxicity in cardiometabolic complications’, the only project in Nantes among the 47 national winners in 2025, has just been set up within the ‘Cardiometabolic Diseases’ research team at l'institut du thorax (€414,000 over three years).
CHOL-TOX aims to explore the deleterious role of free cholesterol in the development of two major diseases: MASLD (metabolic fatty liver disease) and adipose tissue dysfunction.
This project, which unites several of the team’s core research areas, combines fundamental science, human genetics, advanced lipidomics and clinical studies to uncover a mechanism common to metabolic complications linked to obesity and dyslipidaemia. Its findings could pave the way for improved prevention strategies and more personalised therapeutic approaches.
